This semester I have learned a lot about myself as a learner. I found myself to be really set on deadlines and stressed out before this semester occurred because there were always guidelines being placed. However, this semester was a complete turn around from my previous class. The set up of the class was so open and broad that at times I felt overwhelmed with not only the amount of choices but also the lack of guidelines. This was a great learning experience for me because it really shows who I am and how I am willing to work through issues.
I really learned a lot about myself this semester. I realized that my ego gets in the way of a lot of work I do. An example of this would be my unfinished cathode ray tube project, which I bit off more than I could chew. I also think that I try to be so diverse and interesting with my work that I forget about accumulating points and have to rush last minute in order to acquire them. Although I do think that I at least attempted to be ambitious which I am proud of. This is something that I can definitely take away from this class; my surplus of ambition and curiosity in certain areas.
My favorite lab must have been the lava lamp that I created. It was a great project and a great product that I am really proud of. I do think that I took too long on it and that I should've just buckled down and worked on it sooner than later, but I still am amazingly proud of myself for working so hard. I think this really showed my ambition, artistic abilities, and also persistence. I think that I did well in this lab especially because I knew what I was doing and I was able to explain what was happening in depth and clarity. In addition, this lab was much more exciting than the attempt (or lack of) with the cathode ray tube lab because it was easier to understand and I was able to show off my product too.
My motivation was mostly fueled by my ego and probably also the want of a product of some sort. I felt mostly motivated when I was doing something ambitious and/or ended with a beautiful or interesting product. For example, my second favorite lab must have been the bismuth earrings because I was able to show off my product and also enjoy the process of creating it. I also find having some sort of project to exhibit creates a better understanding of the actual science behind it. I know more, and will be able to retain the same information, about the science of lava lamps or the reason why bismuth crystalizes a certain way, than mole to gram ratios, etc.
If I had to say one thing I took away from this class it would have to be the understanding of how I work and what environment I work better in. I realized that I do create better products when I work alone, and selfishly I would like to work alone on almost everything. However, I have also learned that it is better to work with others because it teaches you unique things, which is so much more important. I also realized I love putting things off and procrastinating until it isn't possible to procrastinate anymore. This was definitely a struggle of mine during this whole semester and I am hoping to get rid of this issue by getting most of my work done in the beginning of each section.
